Pay It Forward: National Stamp Out Hunger Day

Today is National Stamp Out Hunger Day.  This year, Stamp Out Hunger is celebrating it's 20th anniversary and is the nations largest single-day food drive.  Last year, generous Americans donated 70.2 million pounds of food, which marked the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected. Did you know that the number of American's living in food insecure homes was nearly 49 million last year and 20% of those were children.  Many households  who are served by Feeding America Hunger reported having to choose between paying a utility bill or purchasing food.  I don't know what that feels like, but I do know that I can help!

You may have received a paper bag from AARP in the mail earlier this week to fill with non perishable foods and leave by the mail box before your normal mail pick up time.  Even if you did not receive one of these AARP bags you can still fill a bag with goodies from your stockpile and leave it for your mail carrier to deliver today. You can donate items like canned meats, fish, soup, bottled juice, vegetables, pasta, cereal and rice that do not require refrigeration. It should go without saying, but please do not include items that have expired. They also are asking that you not include items in glass containers.

Couponing for Community is also wrapping up today so be sure to head over to the page and add your totals to the tracker!  Even though these special events end today, you can continue to give back to your community all year long.
