I came across this Spouses See More Job Choices article and thought it might be interesting to some of you. As a (former?) teacher, I would love to see the process of obtaining a professional license as we move from state to state made simpler. It is frustrating to be forced to pay to retake classes and/or tests you have already taken in one state just because they are slightly different in another. (In my opinion, if you can do your job well in one state, you can do it well in another). Of course for many professions that require licences there are some state specific laws, regulations, standards, etc which need to be learned, but for most jobs the core knowledge is going to be the same.
Being a military spouse with a career can be difficult--So much so that many spouses give up on theirs. That is a sad thing for the workforce because I know a lot of military wives and we are a pretty amazing group of women. If I owned a company I would definitely want employees with the kind of strength and determination it takes to be married to a service member. There are some seriously talented and intelligent women supporting our soldiers and if you want to work I don't think it should be so hard!
My decision to marry a soldier ultimately seems to have become a decision not to have a career of my own. At the age of 23 when I married, I didn't understand that. It's hard for me to believe how much my life has changed -- Just 3 years ago I was in my 5th year of teaching and had some pretty lofty professional goals and ambitions of returning to school for advanced degrees. Now I am in a place where I am not sure if I'll ever even go back to work for many reason. (Actually I should say back to work outside the home. I really do work...I think the Stay-At-Home Mommy Gig is the hardest, most tiresome job I have ever had).
Has being a milspouse changed your career path or do you find it difficult to get a job at each duty station? What do you think about the new initiatives? Are they enough?
