We've PCS'd three times in the last year, so I have moving down to a science. Here is some of my advice.
1. Purge your belongings. If you haven't used it in the past year, donate it to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or on base (ours is the Airman's Attic). It's tax deductible. Plus it will help you to not exceed your load weight limit therefore saving you money. :) Oh, do a partial DITY (Do It Yourself) move. You'll get paid for it.
2. Utilize everything your incoming base has to offer. Such as free child care, the Loan Closet, Housing's Temporary Living facility (TLF), etc.
3. If there is no TLF available, have the House Office write you a letter with approval to stay at a hotel. We stayed in a hotel for a week until we could take possession of our home and we didn't have to pay for it when did this.
4. Lastly, even though I have tons more, try to do a door to door move. It will save you from purchasing items to get you by until your household goods arrive. If you treat the truck driver nice most will give you their cell phone number and will keep in good contact with you. Tell them you want a door to door move. They usually want that too.
Hope this helps someone else. :)
Love these tips! I'm sure you've helped lots of people - especially me! We will be moving soon, so I'll keep all of this in mind. Thanks so much!
